Navigating the Choices in Today’s Boating World

11:00 AM - 11:45 AM

Presented by Jim Lowry of Seattle Boat Share.

Jim’s lifelong passion for boating started at age 6 sailing the Puget Sound – he owned his first boat at age 8, a home-built wooden sailboat. He then built his second boat at the age of 12, a 6’ hydroplane. His boating experiences encompass a wide range, including sailboat racing in high school, college, and beyond, 12 years of commercial fishing by driving a power skiff in Alaska, waterskiing for 40 years, and extensive cruising. Jim’s cruising started at age 10 when the neighbor kids decided to row from Vashon Island to Blake Island for a camping trip. Looking for a career change from construction management after the 2008 financial crisis, Jim put his 4 boats to use and formed Seattle Boat Share based out of Seattle.

       Chartering in the Pacific NW

1:00 PM - 1:45 PM

Presented by Tim Hoving of NW Explorations.

Tim joined the NW Explorations team as a Certified Professional Yacht Broker in 2014 but his boating career began in 1995. In 2000, the opportunity to attend an ASA Instructor Clinic started his instructing career. Deliveries, private instruction, catamaran instruction, navigation and advanced coastal cruising courses in addition to leading flotillas kept him on the water over 100 days a year. In 2005 he secured a 100-ton Masters license. In 2011 he became an Instructor Evaluator and now teaches instructors how to share their passion with students. Teaching navigation courses through the Coast Guard Auxiliary hones his skills as well.

He also became a Recreational Power Boat Association Instructor/Evaluator and has gone over to the “dark side”.  He is known as a “transvesselite”. Areas of the world that Tim feels privileged to have cruised include Alaska, the US & British Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Grenadines and a delivery of an 80’ Ketch from Hawaii to San Diego. However his favorite place to gunk hole is here in the San Juans, Gulf Islands, Desolation Sound & the Broughton Islands. His passion is to share his skills and insights with new people that cross his path. In 2008, a certification from the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association enabled the availability to find boats that bring fulfillment to people.  Tim and his wife of 41 years, Lorraine, live in Birch Bay, WA.
